Synopsis
Rockstar’s exceptional series shrinks in size but loses none of its charm and scope in this portable addition to the Grand Theft Auto world.
Using the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto IV as its template, Chinatown Wars manages to squeeze almost the entire New York-inspired Liberty City onto the Nintendo DS cart. The same witty dialogue and condensed detail remain intact, with the game’s new art style and altered viewpoint being the only small concessions. Playing as Huang Lee, a member of the Chinese Triads of Liberty City, players will need to tracks down the man responsible for Lee’s father’s death, working their way into the city gang underworld along the way.
The Grand Theft Auto series has been in portable form before, but with the unique features of the Nintendo DS the formula has been given room to grow, with most controls mapped to the DS stylus. Players can hotwire cars, pick locks, assemble weaponry and interact with Liberty City in ways never seen before.
Grand Theft Auto IV isn’t a simplified version of the console Grand Theft Auto titles, but rather a true GTA game in its own right. Everything that makes the series so special remains, with a level of control that can’t be created on consoles.
