Synopsis

The Mario Kart racing series has made the leap back to handhelds with its first outing on the DS.

Mario Kart has appeared on a number of Nintendo’s handhelds in previous years, but none have had the muscle to match their console siblings. With the power of the DS behind it, Mario Kart DS recreates the sharp visual style and hectic gameplay of newer Mario Kart titles all within the portable’s dual screens.

These screens are put to good use in Mario Kart DS. The DS’s top screen focuses almost entirely on the gameplay, and all relevant statistics are shown below. The games much-needed map system is also shown on the touch screen, and a view of the race track can be altered simply with a touch.

Visuals are a huge step ahead of previous Mario Kart portable outings, and are some of the best seen on Nintendo’s handheld so far. A wide selection of tracks and karts have all made it on board, and with online play available on Wi-Fi Connection, it’s the best handheld Mario Kart yet.
