Synopsis
The original open-world action series has made the leap to next generation formats and headed back to Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto IV.
When Grand Theft Auto III graced PlayStation 2s the world over in 2001, it gave players a then unknown level of freedom - if you could imagine it, you could probably do it. It’s been a long wait for the series’ next true sequel, and it tweaks the classic formula almost perfectly.
GTA IV stars Niko, an Eastern European immigrant who moves to Liberty City in the hopes of starting his life afresh and forgetting his troubled past. His tale is far more down to earth than the rags to riches stories of past GTAs, but this suits the title’s more realistic tone. GTA’s city of choice, Liberty City, has also had a makeover, and is now almost a duplicate of New York City, with versions of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge both making an appearance.
Grand Theft Auto IV manages to weave an engrossing storyline into one of the most detailed game worlds ever seen, but as with every GTA game before, it’s the little things that make it such a pleasure to play. Simply exploring Liberty City is a game in itself.
