Synopsis

Showered with accolades following its release, BioShock is considered one of the best first person shooters in the genre.

The game opens with a plane crash. Bobbing up and down in the lavishly recreated water, surrounded by fire and destruction, the player begins to swim towards a structure jutting out from the surface. Welcome to Rapture, the name of the broken utopia encapsulated in this structure buried underneath the sea. A place where the best and brightest of society moved in order to strive for perfection, Rapture now lays in tatters. Through the course of the game players discover the story of this world and its inhabitants.

BioShock has all of the standard weapons found in other shooters, complete with multiple types of ammo. As well as these, however, BioShock introduces a new type of weapon called Plasmids. These genetic modifications allow the protagonist Jack to wield an array of powers, ranging from Telekinesis to Electro Bolts. As Jack, players are encouraged to make the gaming experience their own, facing moral choices and using the environment (such as hacking gun turrets to attack enemies) to progress through the game.

Dripping with style, BioShock is one of the most atmospheric shooters ever created, and an experience players will remember for some time.

Features

  • Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival.
  • Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment.
  • Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities.
  • Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience.
  • Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.
  • Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture...or save them?

Review

The Independent

This first-class FPS has had a few tweaks, including a made-over survivor, and the result is a must-play
