Microsoft’s science fiction shooter draws to a close on Xbox 360, as Master Chief returns to finish the fight.
The Halo series almost single-handedly turned Microsoft’s original Xbox into a must-have new console. The cliff hanger that’s been teasing gamers since Halo 2’s ending will finally come to the end in Master Chief’s next generation Halo outing. Gameplay remains mostly unchanged, with only a number of small tweaks being made to the beloved formula. Master Chief can now carry equipment such as shield generators and defensive screens, which add an extra strategic layer to the run-and-gun formula.
Multiplayer has been given a far more comprehensive overhaul, with new maps and gameplay modes making an appearance. The Forge allows players to build and create their own map layouts from scratch, dropping in weapons, vehicles and equipment even during a match. The replay function saves every single Halo 3 match to Bungie’s servers, which can be replayed, edited and sent to friends.
Halo 3 doesn’t disrupt the series’ already outstanding weapon balance and compelling storyline, but manages to create some wonderful new additions gamers may not have realised they even wanted. As the classic trilogy draws to a close, the multiplayer component will make sure it stays popular for years to come online.
